NYPL is phasing out DVDs because of the popularity of streaming. Queens, which still sticks to its ridiculous 3-day checkout for DVDs, has asked people who’ve stopped using DVDs to donate them. NYPL doesn’t seem to understand that streaming is expensive, especially with so many exclusives. It was only within the last five years that NYPL saying that a fourth of New Yorkers don’t even have internet access from home. At $80 a month, it’s a big chunk of my disposable income, and my hard drive is tiny, so I’m not downloading movies. The few I’ve received from others definitely do not look DVD quality.
