Films I Viewed in 2021

(SB)=seen before

All films not made in English were viewed in the original language with English subtitles unless otherwise specified.

I am not subscribed to any streaming service, and the majority of my viewing has been on DVD. I got my VCR set up on July 1, which I use mostly for rarities, often purchased from video stores in the early 2000s VHS phase-out, which I generally limited to independent films released by independent video companies.  I usually specify I watched VHS only if there is something inferior to the presentation, such as cropping or English dubbing, which I already note for DVD.  (On most DVDs, watching the film dubbed is optional, but some releases do not include the original language track, especially the European family films I’ve been buying from Dollar Tree, which are English-only, even though they do have subtitle options.)  I got my TV antenna set up around Thanksgiving.  The reception is not great, especially when the J train passes by my window and often throws it off entirely, so that has to be taken into account for the TV shows I watched off-air.

NYPL is phasing out DVDs because of the popularity of streaming. Queens, which still sticks to its ridiculous 3-day checkout for DVDs has asked people who’ve stopped using DVDs to donate them. NYPL doesn’t seem to understand that streaming is expensive, especially with so many exclusives. It was only within the last five years that NYPL saying that a fourth of New Yorkers don’t even have internet access from home. At $60 a month, it’s a big chunk of my disposable income, and my hard drive is tiny, so I’m not downloading movies. The few I’ve received from others definitely do not look DVD quality.
