Disappointed with SoundHound

January 12, 2018

I posted this 2-star review on GooglePlay:

I was looking for an app that could identify songs from humming, which this purports to do. The song database seems to be limited to the 21st century. The song I wanted to identify is almost certainly from the ’60s, and it wasn’t found. Test songs didn’t work, either. Test songs included “14 or Fight” from Wild in the Streets, “Pentecost Hotel” by Nirvana (UK), “One Day” by Genesis, and “Non più andrai” from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. Two didn’t register any matches. “Pentecost Hotel” got me “Your Ex-Lover Is Dead” by Stars. The Mozart got me “Glad You Came” by The Wanted, and both got me some stuff in Chinese. I have sung opera professionally, so I find it difficult to blame my humming. Either the database is poor or the pitch recognition. This may be a good app to identify recorded music as you’re hearing it, but as an app to hum something from memory, it’s a loser. I asked it to play “One Day” by Genesis, and it did, after it first decided that I wanted “Hey” by Genesis, so I’m not sure how it failed to understand a rendition of the chorus by a professional caliber singer.
